South Africa Visa for Indians (2026): The Fee Is Free, the Paperwork Is Not

Here's a fact almost nobody knows: the South African visitor's visa fee is gratis for Indian nationals. You pay only VFS logistics (about ₹2,040 to ₹2,300 plus a ₹160 convenience fee). What South Africa lacks in fees it makes up for in paperwork discipline, and that's where applications fail.

The checklist that actually gets checked

• Passport valid 30+ days after you leave SA, with 2+ blank pages
• Form DHA-84 filled in black ink and hand-signed (signature must match your passport)
• 2 photos, 35x45mm, taken within the last month
• Bank statement for 3 months, stamped and signed by the bank, balance equivalent to R3,000+ (no e-statements, no passbooks)
• A verifiable hotel booking that names you and your passport number
• Day-by-day itinerary, confirmed flight, employer NOC and a cover letter stating who pays

Travelling with children: the big trap

South Africa requires a notarised unabridged birth certificate plus consent from BOTH parents for every minor, in prescribed formats, and this applies to visa-free travellers too. It is the single most common reason families get refused boarding. We bulletproof these documents as standard.

The new ETA shortcut

South Africa launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation (September 2025) for eligible passports including India and China: fully online with a live selfie and an instant outcome after submission. The catch: it is only valid if you land at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Cape Town International or Lanseria airports. For anything else, it's the sticker route.

Note for July 2026: the SA consulate in Mumbai and the West and South India centres are suspended, so files currently route via the Delhi jurisdiction. Processing: minimum 5 to 7 working days; UK residents applying in London: minimum 14 working days, £35 fee, UK residence status required.
